Development Milestones and Activities of Your Two-Year-Old

A healthy child needs to grow both physically and mentally. This is why it is very important for parents to not only focus on the physical development of their child but also psychological development.

Physical developmental milestones

  • Walks confidently.
  • Jumps.
  • Throws, catches and kicks a ball.
  • Stands on one leg for a moment.
  • Understands how to turn a door handle.
  • Feeding is easier.
  • Controls urinating and passing stools.
  • Opens a lid by themselves, turns screws/knobs using their wrist.
  • Enjoys play falling.
  • Eats food using a spoon.
  • Climbs.
  • Wears slippers.

Psychological development milestones

  • Draws circles and zeroes.
  • Places up to five building blocks on top of each other.
  • Imitates others.
  • Recognises known people and objects.
  • Points body parts when you name them.
  • Follows simple instructions.
  • Draws shapes and objects which can be identified.
  • Has improved vocabulary and sentence structures.
  • Has learned to differentiate types of objects e.g. flowers, trees.
  • Understands instructions (might choose to disobey).
  • Understands concepts such as ‘similar’ vs ‘different’.
  • Remembers and repeats stories.
  • Counts up to 3.
  • Recognises themselves in photos.

First-year vaccinations

At 18 months (1 ½ year) your little one will have completed the Triple vaccine and Polio oral vaccine. This prevents diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus and polio.

What you can do to help your child’s development:

  • Teach short stories.
  • Ask them to name items on books.
  • Teach them the concept of categories such as animals, clothes, food.
  • Teach them to wash hands.
  • Get your child bath time toys and let them play with the toys including pouring water.
  • Teach your child how to protect themselves and their body.
  • Let them play with soap bubbles.
  • Buy them toys of various shapes.
